Wilderness Wildlife Week and Sugarlands/Twin Creeks Trail Hike
January 12th through 19th, 2013
Fellow Hikers:
For those who wish to stay at the Red Roof Inn, Pigeon Forge,, please call the hotel directly 865 908-6633 and inform them that you are with the Tellico Village Hiking Club. We have a rate of $29 + tax per night for the nights of Wilderness Week.
A social will take place in the Breakfast Room of the Red Roof Inn on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 5:00 PM. If you wish to participate, please bring an appetizer and libation of choice. Assuming that the brewery next door will have their half price pizza night Tuesday evening, you can join us for dinner there or dine at anyone of the other great choices available in the area.
Our signature hike for Wednesday January 16th is described below.  Another hike may be planned for Thursday January 17th.  Of course you can hike any of the Wilderness Week hikes planned for that week.

For Hikers Leaving from Tellico Village
The Sugarland Hike

the Sugarlands Visitor Center, Gatlinburg

Driving Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Distance: 10 miles
Elevation Gain: Approximately 1100 feet

The hike is the Club’s annual January hike which includes lunch at a restaurant in Gatlinburg (approx. 8 miles from the start of the hike to the restaurant – Best Little Italian Restaurant).  Wear appropriate winter hiking shoes or boots. This year’s hike will coordinate with Wilderness Wildlife Week in Pigeon Forge and many of the hikers for this hike and staying in Pigeon Forge will meet those hikers who are coming from Tellico Village at the Sugarland’s Visitor’s Center (see directions below from Tellico Village).
If you are planning to take this hike but leave from Tellico Village, we are looking for someone to lead the group from the Cooper Visitors Center opp. the Marathon gas station in Tellico Village to Sugarland Visitor’s Center. The Club will provide the leaders for the actual hike. Please contact Bob Kutschera or Dolly Garnett if you have any questions and/or would like to volunteer.
Driving directions from Tellico Village to Sugarland Visitors Center:
From the Cooper Visitors Center take TN 444 to US 321.  Turn toward Maryville.  Continue through Maryville to Townsend.  At the traffic light in Townsend turn left toward Pigeon Forge.  Continue 5.7 miles to Lyons Springs Road.  Turn right and continue 2.6 miles to Metcalf Bottoms picnic area and a “T” with TN 73.  Turn left and continue to the Sugarland’s Visitor Center for restrooms and trailhead. You will be met here and then directed to the parking for the hike.
Hiking boots and hiking stick(s) are highly recommended.  Bring ample water.
Car-pooling is recommended and will be set up the morning of the hike. Passengers coming from Tellico Village that morning are asked to contribute $6 to the driver to help cover gas etc.
