Marjorie Byron's big adventure

Marjorie Delong, 73, of Daytona Beach, Fl has completed the Appalachian Trail. She wanted to keep her weight at 100 pounds, but it dipped to 93 during the hiking.

She says,

"If you really want to do it, do it," she said. "If somebody my age and condition can do it, anybody can."

"And what's next for Byron?

She hopes to hike the Pacific Coast Trail."

Forest Service Dynamites old growth hemlocks in Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest

Yesterday, April 5, Bob Wegener alerted me that the Forest Service had dynamited many hemlocks dying from woolly aldegid infestations in an effort to keep the trail safe for visitors.  But their efforts also ruined the trail.

Here's one comment: "Last week I visited Joyce Kilmer for the first time. I was shocked by the devastation. I greatly looked forward to wandering in the old growth, but the downed trees are so predominant, it was all we noticed. "

You can see some pictures here: http://www.ents-bbs.org/viewtopic.php?f=106&t=1775

So if you were thinking of hiking this trail or bringing out of town visitors to see it, it's probably not a good idea.  The great big hemlock that required about 8 people to circle is no more.

There's more information here.

Because of the weather, it has been decided to cancel the Wednesday Old Sugarlands Trail hike. Hopefully we will be able to reschedule it sometime later in the year.

We called Pigeon Forge this morning and was told that Rt. 321 into Pigeon Forge from Townsend was impassable. They had about 5" of snow and expecting more.

This is a circle hike following the lake shore. There should be nice views of the lake and mountains with the leaves off the trees. The visitors center and the fort itself are also worthy of a visit after the hike.

Wilderness Week - Overnight

Fellow hikers, please email Bob Kutschera if you have already or when you place your reservations with the Red Roof Inn in Pigeon Forge for Wilderness Week.

In case we have to send out an announcement to those who will be there, it will help to have the reservation information (name and dates reserved).

As we get closer to Wilderness Week we will send out more information regarding the planned hikes.

Happy Thanksgiving
